2010 Future of Food Student Research Conference

Food is more than a commodity.  It is sustenance. It is integral to our economy, our environment, our health, and our public policies. It is simultaneously in excess and in shortage. It is both scientific and emotional. Students interested in food and nutrition have a lot to talk about; however, there are relatively few opportunities for students to present research and initiate dialogue with colleagues outside their immediate institutions.

With that in mind, the Friedman School is hosting this year’s The Future of Food and Nutrition: A Multidisciplinary Graduate Research Conference taking place on April 10, 2010. Now in its fourth year, The Future of Food and Nutrition conference has been extremely successful. Last year, 105 participants from 28 universities and organizations, both domestic and international, attended the event. For the past three years the conference has brought together a diversity of opinion within and across disciplines, sparked thought-provoking conversations, and initiated partnerships that students can build upon throughout their careers. Feedback from all types of participants – students, faculty, and visitors – has been overwhelmingly positive.

The conference is an opportunity for graduate and doctoral students to present their research to future colleagues in nutrition, not to mention, a great resume builder!  Some students will present their work orally and some will contribute a poster presentation.  The conference will culminate with an expert panel and a group discussion.  The title of year’s panel is:  “Addressing the Global Obesity Epidemic: Poverty, Production, and Politics.”  The panel will include diverse perspectives and engaging discussion to address this pressing and complex issue.

We encourage any graduate or doctoral student to submit an abstract proposal to share their research at the conference.  You may submit on abstract online at

Abstract submissions are due by February 5th.

The Friedman Sprout is a monthly student run newspaper that aims to serve the student population at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, prospective students, and alumni. Our mission is to report on newsworthy information that affects the Friedman community including nutrition research, food policy, internship and volunteer opportunities, as well as school events.
