September Sprout – The 3rd Year Anniversary Issue!

Welcome back students, and welcome to the fall issue of The Friedman Sprout!

As the first ever co-editors of The Sprout, we are excited to continue Friedman’s student-run paper. This semester The Sprout enters its 3rd year, and we hope it remains a place for discussing the issues that we are all so passionate about, whether that be the latest nutrition news, the best eateries in Boston, or breaking Tufts research.  Great things are growing at The Sprout this year!

Top 10 trails: A runners guide to Boston and the surrounding areas.  By Sarah Gold.  New to Boston and wondering about running and biking trails?  Our list provides you with the most popular destinations in and around town.

The Tale of David and the Soda Industry: The Battle Against Using Food Stamps for Soda.  By Katie Andrews.  In late August, the USDA rejected a proposal to ban the use of food stamps to purchase soda in New York City. The ban was part of a two-year experiment to fight the city’s increasing obesity epidemic.  Do we have a right to soda?

Launch of “Strong Women Across America” Tour.  Research update by Allison Knott, RD.  This September Dr. Miriam Nelson, Director of the John Hancock Research Center, and her team will embark on a cross-country tour to change America’s physical activity and food access environment.

Restaurant Review: Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar.  By Christine Gary.  This Back Bay venue reinvents Mexican-inspired cuisine by mixing it with New England seafood staples.

The Growing Movement to Restore Outdoor Play.  Internship highlight by Meghan Johnson.   Scientists and policy makers are exploring active community designs that support healthy lifestyles in children.  Reporting from the National Park Service, Meghan discusses the most influential groups and initiatives.

Tabbouleh: Tribute to Summer Salads.  Featured Recipe by Rachel Perez.  This easy herbal mix is light to the taste yet study in storage—making it the perfect salad to transition from summer to fall.

Inside America’s Test Kitchen with Amy Scheuerman, MS, N’10.  Alumni Spotlight by Rachel Perez.  AFE alum talks about her Friedman journey, the creation of The Friedman Sprout, and discloses details about her current job at America’s Test Kitchen.


The Friedman Sprout is a monthly student run newspaper that aims to serve the student population at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, prospective students, and alumni. Our mission is to report on newsworthy information that affects the Friedman community including nutrition research, food policy, internship and volunteer opportunities, as well as school events. Our editorial slant is that of sustainability in food and nutrition.
