While the ‘arctic chill’ continues to be the theme of winter in New England, we can count on long weekends, a romantic holiday, student group events and a new Friedman Sprout design to keep our insides cheery through February.  Ms. Garland was definitely in the Friedman mindset when she declared being true to oneself as the most fulfilling and effective way to exist in this world.  Friedman is known for it’s extremely unique and niche programs: where else can you learn about food, nutrition, and agriculture from a biomedical, clinical, social and behavioral standpoint?  We are enthusiastic to delve into our food and health obsessions, staying true to our passion and calling.

We have taken this opportunity to revamp The Friedman Sprout into a first-rate version of itself (though we’re still Under Construction), as Friedman’s own student-run newspaper.  We will continue to hone the Sprout’s appearance, newsworthiness and professionalism, while growing its writer- and readership. Comments are welcomed! We’d love to know what you think!

This month features a piece on the plight of restaurant workers in the United States and highlights the recent battle to increase the minimum wage for the food service positions.  “Restaurant Workers: The Missing Conversation on Food Justice” exposes the facts behind the industry’s effort to keep wages low and the scary reality that this workforce and the public face due to such wages and working conditions.

The Farm Bill Update provides us with the 4-1-1 on what finally led to the bill’s passage by Congress and signage by President Obama.

The article, “Recycling Your Term Papers” offers us tips for how to put our hard work to another use.  This issue’s Alumna Spotlight highlights Sarah Borron and gears us up for another Friedman D.C. networking trip this Spring. And yes, Chipotle now has its very own TV show, as many popular brands are doing now.  “Farmed and Dangerous” provides you with some commentary on the show’s moral high ground and a link to watch.

And as always, we have a melodic and witty poem to lead us into Valentine’s Day with an interesting spin on the world’s most prized aphrodisiac.

Our “Candy” Bars recipe adapted from Gwyneth Paltrow is the perfect nutrition-approved pick-me-up snack that you can feel good giving to your loved ones or saving for a study break.

And if you’re short on time to prepare food this month, we have a delicious and nutritious answer to your lunch- or dinnertime-stomach grumbles—Foumami.  This Financial District Asian Fusion sandwich shop is a short jaunt from campus and will provide you with some first rate grub for less than $10.

Spotlight on Sarah Borron of Food & Water Watch, by Janeen Madan. The Sprout sits down for an interview with Friedman alum, Sarah Borron to discuss her position as a researcher at the Washington, D.C.-based organization. With jobs and internships on everyone’s minds, Sarah has lots of timely advise for Sprout readers.

The Friedman Sprout is a monthly student run newspaper that aims to serve the student population at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, prospective students, and alumni. Our mission is to report on newsworthy information that affects the Friedman community including nutrition research, food policy, internship and volunteer opportunities, as well as school events. Our editorial slant is that of sustainability in food and nutrition.
